Perth Symphony Orchestra to join Diana Krall at 30th Leeuwin Concert Series!

With Special Guest JAMES MORRISON
15 & 16 February 2014

Perth Symphony Orchestra returns to Leeuwin Estate in 2014 following their successful performance in 2012 with David Hobson and Marina Prior to join Canadian jazz pianist and contralto singer Diana Krall and jazz trumpet maestro James Morrison onstage for the 30th Leeuwin Estate concert series at the Margaret River winery on February 15 and 16.

The recipient of two Grammy Awards and eight Juno Awards, Diana Krall has sold more than 15 million albums worldwide. She has also earned nine gold, three platinum, and seven multi-platinum albums. Billboard magazine named her the second Jazz artist of the 2000-09 decade and she is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debuting at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums Chart. Acclaimed for her contralto vocals and remarkable piano playing, Diana Krall’s concert performances receive outstanding reviews.

POST CONCERT ARENA PARTY: Australian trumpeter and Jazz virtuoso, James Morrison, will perform as a special guest and his post concert “Motown Revisited” show promises to keep guests in the main arena dancing until late.

The Perth Symphony Orchestra is thrilled to launch the inaugural WA Composer’s Competition for 2014.

Justin Burford joins PSO

justin burford

Justin Burford will be one of several incredible WA-based artists to perform at the 2014 Perth Symphony Summer Proms Concert: Symphony by the Lake. Justin recently joined the strings from Perth Symphony at a family concert for the Town of Claremont performing hits by INXS, Lou Reed and John Lennon. Whilst discussions are still taking place to decide which songs Justin will front at the concert, our money is on Lennon’s “Imagine” after the reception he received at the strings concert. We will be sure to announce his chosen song very soon so BOOK NOW to secure tickets to hear Justin in action with the Perth Symphony Orchestra!

About Justin

Over the past 10 years, Justin has carved out a legacy for himself, releasing three records, earning platinum sales and receiving a multitude of awards including two ARIAs.

More recently, Justin has turned his eye to acting and played the lead role of Drew in the Australian production of the Broadway smash-hit musical, Rock Of Ages, for which he was nominated for a Helpmann Award. The Age described Justin’s singing voice as akin to “honey with gravel in it” and his performance received a five star rating in their review.0030_JustinBurford_H1048_small-199x300

In 2012, Justin wrote and performed in his own show KURT that was premiered at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. The show was a smashing success, playing two sold out nights and receiving consistently glowing reviews. 2012 also saw Justin moving over into the field of screen acting; landing the lead roles in three short films before writing and performing in his own black comedy short, See You Next Wednesday, due for completion 2013.

This year will also see the completion of Justin’s first feature film. Justin won the lead role of Jesse Milton in the locally produced supernatural thriller, Foreshadow. He has also made an impact with his guest appearances on up coming web series productions, The Legend Of Gavin Tanner and Super Dingo 2.0 as the delightfully villainous, light sabre swinging Garth Roth.

In his rare stints of down time, Justin enjoys the arts and is currently working on a series of paintings for his own show. Music however, will always be a passion for Justin and he can still be found performing solo acoustic shows at local venues with an eclectic mix of his well known originals and favourite covers.

Perth Chamber Orchestra’s Vivaldi reviewed

The new Perth Chamber Orchestra has excelled again. After the inaugural concert where reviewer Neville Cohn from The West Australian stated “Make every effort to listen to the Perth Chamber Orchestra at its next gig. It’s too good to miss”, the second concert drew the following praise from ArtsHub reviewer Carol Flavell Neist, “Already the cognoscenti are comparing Perth Chamber Orchestra, launched only months ago, to some of the world’s best ensembles.”

Scotch College the official home of PSO!

Scotch College, located in Swanbourne, is now the official home of the Perth Symphony Orchestra.

The School – one of Australia’s leading Schools for boys – is partnering with the orchestra, and will be providing rehearsal facilities and equipment from stands to percussion for the Orchestra to use in preparation for a number of concerts.

LOGO-Scotch_colour_PRINTMusic is an integral part of the curriculum at Scotch College, with over 600 boys learning an instrument each week. Students are also encouraged to form ensembles – over 20 rehearse each week, and guided by skilled music educators, the boys perform throughout the year at many formal School concerts, official functions and weekly School assemblies, often travelling as far as the Eastern States to participate in other external festivals, competitions and community events. To enhance the balanced nature of musical endeavours, strong links have been fostered with Presbyterian Ladies’ College (PLC) to enable both Music departments to develop several combined large ensembles.

Notable Scotch College Alumni include Iain Grandage, Ashley Arbuckle, Pendulum (Rob Swire-Thomson, Gareth Williams), Charles Mellor, Oliver Cuneo, Robert Gladstones, Andrew Raymond, Tom Woods, Nicholas Woodend, Burke Turner, and Brian Hanly.

As time progresses, it is hoped that the boys from the School will benefit from the orchestra rehearsing on school grounds, as they will be able to sit in on many rehearsals and potentially follow scores and meet with players, giving them the opportunity to gain tips, tricks and valuable knowledge from professional musicians.

Perth Symphony welcomes AHG as Foundation Partner

We are incredibly excited to announce Automotive Holdings Group has signed on as the Foundation Partner of Perth Symphony Orchestra, inking a three year sponsorship that underpins the administration and logistics of the ambitious musical undertaking fronted by a group of respected musicians led by director Bourby Webster and chief conductor Jessica Gethin.

AHG managing director Bronte Howson said the partnership had its genesis when PSO played at the 2012 Leeuwin concert. “I think anyone who saw their performance with Marina Prior and David Hobson had to be impressed,” said Mr Howson.

“We had some initial discussions with Bourby about the orchestra’s requirements to reach its goals and we realised that there was an opportunity for AHG to be part of something we believe will be really important in the Western Australian community.”

Mr Howson said the partnership complemented AHG’s many existing community sponsorships. “We have a strong position in community engagement through community service organisations such as Rocky Bay along with a range of sporting sponsorships. This partnership will give us a strong and very enthusiastic presence in Western Australia’s cultural scene.

The AHG partnership includes a significant contribution to PSO’s administrative costs, a range of corporate performance opportunities and transport support for visiting players and for the orchestra’s performances outside the Perth metropolitan area and is worth over six figures per year .

Ms Webster said the partnership was important to PSO.

“The Perth Symphony Orchestra has established itself in a very short space of time as an exciting and broadly appealing new entertainment experience in WA’s cultural scene,” she said. “AHG coming on board as a Foundation Partner provides important financial and in-kind support over the next three years, and will assist us in sharing the wonderful experience of a symphony concert with new, diverse audiences – something we are committed to doing.”

One of the exciting developments will be a Rand Truck emblazoned with a banner showcasing the PSO that will travel daily up and down WA’s main freeway, promoting the orchestra and the relationship.
