Tuesday 4 June, Nadia Mitsopoulos and the ABC Perth Mornings team did a very special live broadcast at The State Library of Western Australia, celebrating 100 years of 6WF and ABC Radio Perth, with Perth Symphony Orchestra recreating original pieces of music that were performed on the first ever broadcast of 6WF.
On June 4, 1924, 6WF made its first broadcast from Wellington Street. At that time (before the ABC) the service was put in place by Westralian Farmers (Wesfarmers) to overcome some of the isolation felt by farmers.
Since then 6WF – now ABC Radio Perth - has played a central and crucial role in the lives of West Australians all over the State through so many times of crisis and celebration.
At this special event we heard about early connections with the station, including from Wesfarmers, which started the early broadcasts on June 4th 1924 to reach isolated farmers.
And met some of ABC Radio's key players, to put a 'face to the familiar voices' you've heard on the wireless in the past few decades
The State Library of Western Australia also showcased treasured archive material and stories relating to the birth of 6WF, which went on to become ABC Radio.
