Women on the Podium 2024 Launch

March 21, 2024 in

And so it begins for 2024! Our next talented Women on the Podium Advanced and Intermediate Scholars have been selected!

Celebrations began with introductions between our new Advanced and Intermedia Scholars, Artistic Advisor, Alice Farnham remotely joining in from London, our Ambassador Jessica Gethin (who was recently inducted into the WA Women's Hall of Fame 2024) from backstage before a rehearsal and by two remote Scholars, one from Denmark, WA and one from Darwin. Once all were warmed up and settled in, we welcomed our special guests for the evening, French conductor Zahia Ziouani and her sister, cellist Fettouma Ziouani.

Zahia Ziouani, one of the first female conductors in the world, and her sister Fettouma Ziouani a remarkable cellist, flew down to Perth ahead of the French Film Festival for their screening of 'Divertimento', based upon the true events and journey of Zahia and Fettouma, set in 1995, facing formidable odds as they aspired to break into the exclusive domaine of classical symphonic music. Painting a remarkable portrait of these young women defying expectations and overcoming societal barriers.

Our scholars, Ambassador, Artistic Director, Creative Director Fiona Campbell and CEO, Catherine Henwood had the opportunity to explore the worlds of Zahia and Fettouma with a deep dive Q&A with questions ranging from, how the orchestra had evolved over the past 25 years to how it felt to see young actors representing them on screen.

A truly inspiring experience to kick off our 2024 Women on the Podium season!

Please note: The last day for Emerging Scholars to apply for 'Women on the Podium 2024' is Friday 29 March.
